Dreams Come True Announces Vocal Green Hill Zone Single

A special treat to drink tea to.

If you caught the Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony, there was a special announcement during the intermission where Masato Nakamura of Dreams Come True announced a new single of the Green Hill Zone theme. This version will feature lyrics and vocals from Miwa Yoshida. No formats, platforms, or date were announced.

However, you may have already heard a bit of this single already if you caught a Japanese tea commercial last month. The version announced today will most likely be a full version of this commercial’s jingle. So grab a green tea, and keep an ear out for when the full song drops!

Meet the 30th Anniversary Edition of Sonic the Hedgehog on Mega Drive That Almost Happened

Everybody has their favourite Sonic game, but today – on the blue blur’s birthday – it’s without question that the focus should be on the original Mega Drive/Genesis title that started it all. And to celebrate Sonic’s 30th Anniversary, an inspired product designer came close to convincing SEGA to re-produce a special edition of Sonic 1 that would play on original 1990s hardware.

Concept art shows first images from Sonic Prime

From Patrick Horan’s Artstation page comes the first-ever images of Netflix’s Sonic Prime. Patrick was a concept artist on the series. “I was responsible for cleaning up the layouts and color.”

From what we can see from the images below, Sonic’s design adds new gloves and some funky, red shoes. Looks like Sonic will be dealing with a large group (a carton?) of Eggmen, a cavewoman Amy, and a kitsune Tails. Check out the other images below.

Minecraft Sonic DLC: It’s Official and Out Now!

For those who don’t like gentle curves.

At the end of June’s Sonic Central presentation, Sega teased Sonic coming to Minecraft. Today, we’ve got our first look and our first details. And our first release– it’s now. The DLC is out now. You can go get it. Or so the trailer says.

While tricky to find exact details without actually owning a copy of Minecraft, the official blog post bills this as an infinite 3D runner featuring loops, springs rings, chao, and badniks across Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, and Tails’ workshop. Players can use skins of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and plenty of others.

UPDATE: The pack, available within the Minecraft in-game Marketplace, is priced at $7.99 (USD), or 1340 Minecoins. The pack includes one Minecraft world (as seen in the trailers), and 24 skins including:

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, Big, Cream, E-102 Gamma, Shadow, Rouge, E-123 Omega, Chaos, Vector, Charmy, Espio, Mighty, Silver, Blaze, Ray, Infinite, Mecha Sonic (Sonic & Knuckles), Metal Sonic, Metal Knuckles (Sonic R), and Werehog Sonic.

Sonic Going Super in Sonic Forces Mobile on June 23

We now know when Super Sonic will be heading to Sonic Forces Mobile, and it looks like it’ll be a birthday gift for blue blur: the character will be hitting the mobile racer on June 23.

This new character will mostly have the same power ups as vanilla Sonic, ice mine and fireball. But in place of the speed shoes, Super Sonic will instead have “Super Sonic form,” which appears to suggest that the character won’t be Super Sonic all the time, just while this ability is active. What’s interesting about this ability, however, is that it seems you earn it by collecting rings, not through item boxes. The exact amount isn’t specified, though 50 rings is probably a safe assumption.

Like previous Sonic Forces characters, Super Sonic will need to be unlocked via character cards. Gold rings will also be earned through battle chests throughout the event.

The Super Sonic event will run from June 23 to July 5, so players will have plenty of time to unlock the racer. Once we’ve got him we’ll try to provide video, so stay tuned!

Sonic Colors: Ultimate Producer Explains Player Customization and Tails Save

Today, Shacknews posted a video interview with Aaron Roseman, producer of Sonic Colors: Ultimate, revealing a bit about the porting process and revealing several small details that differentiate Ultimate from the original Wii release.

Roseman notes that the Tails Save system does replace the lives system in the game. You still collect Tails Saves in the same way you collect lives, but it places you in your last safe location rather than a the beginning of a stage or mid-stage checkpoint. Another slight aid is the addition of the “Hundred Ring,” a special item that gives the player 100 rings and invincibility.

The interview also highlights the character customization elements new to this version of the game. Through gameplay, players will be able to unlock options for shoes, gloves, effect trails when Sonic boosts, and auras that surround Sonic. “You can adjust the colors in a game called Sonic Colors,” the interviewer notes.

Other details in the interview:

  • The game is standard controller focused. It will not use motion controls.
  • Cutscene videos have been updated for HD and 4K resolutions.
  • The game does not use all the technical features of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but Roseman states it runs very well on both consoles.
  • This game was primarily developed during Covid quarantine, with staff working from home.
  • Roseman has an impressive NES collection on the shelves behind him. I’m jealous.

Shacknews also secured a full stage playthrough of Tropical Resort Act 3:

Sonic 2 Movie Spoilers: We Have Our First Spoken Dialogue From the Hawaii Shoot (UPDATE)

SPOILER WARNING: Don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled, you have been warned!

In new footage just leaked over Twitter, we have what is definitely a spoiler for the Sonic 2 movie: Sonic crashing Tom and Maddie’s Hawaii honeymoon, with what appears to be Tails and bad weather in tow. Well, specifically, he appears to be talking to Tails over some sort of radio. If I had to guess, this is from the start of the movie’s third act, and the point at which Tom and Maddie re-enter the plot.

It’s hard to make out exactly what is being said, but it seems that Sonic is “in trouble” with Tom (presumably something to do with the snow), Sonic is explaining that Robotnik is back, and as we said earlier, is talking to Tails over a radio.

We’ll work on getting our own recording in case this tweet gets deleted, but for now, here it is:

UPDATE: It appears the video was removed by Paramount. So it seems we’ve reached the limit of what media they’ll let float around! Of course, content like this is difficult to scrub from the internet (even we grabbed it, though we’re not posting it right now), so it’s probably still possible to find if you dig around for it.

We might attempt to update this post with a transcription, but for now we’ve at least got a screenshot from the video. It shows Tom and Maddie stumbling through the snow, right before Tom yells at Sonic and Sonic delivers his info dump:

SEGA Joypolis Could Be Heading to Europe and the US

Last year, SEGA sold their Joypolis amusement business to the China Animation Cultural Technology Group. Now CA Joypolis, the company created by that sale, is exploring expanding the SEGA-branded indoor park into overseas markets. The news comes from YouTuber and former Sonic Stadium staffer Dave “Badnik Mechanic” Luty.

According to a report CA Joypolis released, “the Group has entered a [memorandum of understanding] with another international partner to select a location for launching theme park in the UK within approximately half a year and explore the possibility to launch theme parks in Europe, North America and elsewhere.”

At the moment, there are three Joypolis locations, all in Asia, with a fourth now planned to open in South China. It’s been a long time since western markets have seen a proper SEGA theme park, with the only serious attempt SEGAWorld, which launched in the UK and Australia back in the 90s, and only lasted a few years. Sonic’s presence at the current Joypolis locations doesn’t tend to be that large, due to the character’s lack of popularity in Asia. One wonders whether or not a UK version of the park would feature the character more prominently.

We may have a better idea of whether a UK Joypolis location will happen, and perhaps what form it will take, by the end of the year.
