Sixty years ago on June 3 1960, Nihon Goraku Bussan, a distributor of Rock-Ola jukeboxes, was established. The company was one of two created as a successor to Service Games, Japan, and was run by American salesman Richard Stewart. Service Games itself was established by Stewart as a distribution arm for the company he was a salesman for, Service Games, Hawaii, which was a company that specialized in selling coin operated amusement devices on US military bases. Nihon Goraku Bussan would acquire Service Games, Japan’s other successor, Nihon Kikai Seizo, four years later, before merging with Rosen Enterprises in 1965 and formerly becoming SEGA Enterprises. We currently live in a world where E3 is cancelled. Well, everything is kind of cancelled. But that doesn’t mean the hype train hasn’t left the station! Rumours have been circulating about SEGA’s next project, and according to some reputable sources, it’s going to be a big one.

Tikal, the ancient echidna spirit from Sonic Adventure, will be joining the Sonic Forces mobile roster soon. SEGA Hardlight announced her on their Twitter account, with the image posted below.
This will be only the third time Tikal has ever been playable. There is currently no word on when she will be available, or how difficult she will be to unlock. Be sure to check Sonic Stadium for more details in the future!

Evan Stanley will be taking over as writer for a time starting with issue #33, which currently doesn’t have a release date. Flynn will be returning to the series in 2021 with a new villain-focused mini series, “Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys,” as well as some stories in the main book.

First 4 Figures, in partnership with GNF Toyz, has revealed the latest figures in its Boom 8 line of toys, Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic. The toys will be arriving in stores later this year. No price or release date have been announced at this time, though if past figures are any indication, they will go for around $32.

SEGA has apparently decided to take its time with Sonic games from now on. On the premiere episode of the new season of SEGA’s Sonic Official stream, Sonic social media guru Aaron Webber confirmed that the company was now prioritizing quality over quantity when it came to Sonic games. After two seasons of low-stakes action, clever jokes, slice of life scenarios and plenty of meta references, we have finally gotten some official confirmation that the Sonic Boom television show will not be continued.

Good things come in pairs, and following the Sonic sale on the U.S. Nintendo eShop, Microsoft joins in with intense 50% discounts on ten more Sonic games for multiple Xbox Marketplace regions, most of which aren’t part of the Nintendo sale. As a reminder, all these games are playable on the Xbox One, and will likely be playable on the Series X in the near future.

So far, SEGA Japan’s Sonic 2020 streams have been rather uneventful, mostly focusing on merchandise for the Japanese market. If you enjoy the Sonic Official livestreams you’re in luck, because they are returning on Thursday! Sonic the Hedgehog Social Media Manager Katie Chrzanowski has put out the call for fan art to be featured on the stream, which you can submit here.
Chrzanowski confirmed that the streams will be done virtually until it’s safe for them to return to the office. As usual, you will be able to watch the stream on the official Sonic YouTube channel.

A lot of annual events may be getting canceled this year, but there’s at least one we can still look forward to: the Sonic Amateur Games Expo. The expo, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, will launch on September 5th and run until the 12th. As usual, you will be able to check out lots of fan projects, both new and ongoing, as well as some original projects.

Lee Majdoub, known to Sonic fans as Agent Stone from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, will be attending Sonic Revolution 2020 this year.
Normally, the convention is held every June in Southern California, but for the first time ever, the convention will be held digitally and will be seen streaming live and online through Twitch and Discord. The convention will be available online on Saturday, June 20th. Guest lineup and more details will be coming soon.

Numskull’s official SEGA Shop has teased a brand new product, in news that could very well ‘light’ up our weekends! Infinite fans rejoice! Infinite fans? I mean, you have to exist somewhere, don’t you? Anyhow, if you are a fan of Sonic Force’s helmet-clad antagonist, Great Eastern Entertainment has you covered with a teaser for everyone’s favorite jackal returning in plush form this August.

GE Entertainment, also known as GE Animation, is a long standing licensed anime merch manufacturer, and has worked with such licenses as Sanrio, Shonen Jump, and Bandai. The company sports a history of quality Sonic plush, and this diamond dog will join the likes of Super Shadow, regular Shadow, Metal Sonic, and other plush rogues and Rouges. If previous releases serve as an example, Infinite’s price could fall somewhere between $20 and $36 USD depending on size and complexity.

SEGA Brand Manager Nathan Shabazi has shared a new Sonic billboard. The billboard promotes the #StayHomePlayHome hashtag, which has been utilized by organizations and companies to encourage people to remain indoors during the pandemic. Check it out below:
In his tweet Shabazi thanked Liquid Advertising for getting these up, although it’s not exactly clear where these are going up at the moment.

In a recent interview with toy enthusiast website Toy Hype USA, Jakks Pacific SVP of Marketing Craig Drobis confirmed that the company’s first articulated Sonic figures will arrive in the fall. The line will launch with four figures, including Sonic, Eggman, Tails and Shadow, each of which also come with an accessory from the games. In addition to these figures, Drobis also revealed that a yet-to-be-shown articulated Metal Sonic figure will be released before the end fo the year.
When asked about whether or not Sonic Heroes’ Neo Metal Sonic was in the cards, Drobis would only say that they hadn’t gotten to the character yet, because there focus has been on “classic and modern Sonic characters,” likely meaning any Sonic characters from the mid-2000s that are no longer relevant are currently out of luck.
These figures were first shown at the New York Toy Fair back in February, alongside a variety of other Sonic merchandise. The interview featured the first clear images of these figures, which you can check out below.

Authentic Sonic 1 beta footage remains an uncommon find, but in early January, Youtube user wadelyjp posted a Japanese Mega Drive promotional video featuring about six minutes of pre-final build Sonic 1! Wadelyjp’s account has uploaded a number of 90’s and early 2000’s Japanese promo videos and ads from Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, and others.
The video, which Google translates to “SEGA New Game Introduction Video Vol. 7,” immediately reveals itself to be a beta build, showing off several stage gimmicks and differences previously found in stills and magazine scans that never made it into the final published version. These differences include but are not limited to:
An tethered checkerboard ball that rolls down hills in Green Hill
An invincibility monitor on top of the first loop instead of a shield
A victory hop replacing Sonic’s rolling jump after spinning the end of level signpost
No special stage ring for having 50 rings at the end of an act
Sped up music in Green Hill Act 3, including the boss fight and end-of-level scoring (the same music speed you’d get from a power sneakers monitor)
UFOs in the sky of Marble Zone
No enemies in Star Light Zone
An unused spinning spike trap in Spring Yard Zone
A shorter air limit in Labyrinth Zone
An unused special stage layout? (There does not appear to be a direct equivalent in the released game)
This isn’t the first found footage of Sonic 1 beta; its predecessors include footage of Green Hill Act 1 in a build used for the pilot episode of Nick Arcade. However, this version contains two full levels, the game’s first boss fight, and clips from later stages. This unearthed gem shines as another clue in our ever growing view on how Sonic evolved from sketchbook to game.
