In what’s no doubt a way to capitalize on the success and hype of the recently released Sonic Movie, SEGA is offering massive discounts on Sonic games across various digital platforms. In some cases, the games are 50% or even 75% off their regular market price!
Oh, you can play Sonic X-Treme… In your (copy of) DREAMS!
Media Molecule’s Dreams is a new PS4 game (well, more of a tool than a game) that lets users create their own games with much more freedom than you had in their previous creation title, Little Big Planet. It’s been in a beta stage for a long time and people have been using that time to make unique and interesting games along with some that are inspired by other popular genres.
One player, JPG240SX has created 2 stages inspired by Sonic X-Treme, the long-lost Sega Saturn title. The version he created uses low-res textures and a fisheye-lens camera to get the effect of what the original title was going for. It’s really impressive.
The engine that Media Molecule is using in Dreams is so impressive that people are already making levels based off of Sonic Adventure and other Sonic titles and even making their own original, momentum-based Sonic games. It’s a game creation tool like no other.
Dreams is available now for PS4 at $39.99 US.

Sonic Movie Writer talks about sequel
Writer Josh Miller had a chat with Popcorn Talk to discuss the latest Sonic movie and what he’d like to see in a sequel if that happens. “We wanna bring in more characters” was his first response. He has an affinity for Tails, but would also love to see Knuckles introduced as well.
He also mentioned that he’d love to see Sonic’s first voice actor, Jaleel White to make a cameo in the next movie should a sequel occur.
The above video is just a clip of the full interview that you can find here.

Old Sonic Movie Concept Features Unused Villain, Sonic Fighting With Chris Evans
Early movie concept art can be pretty weird and cool, and it should surprise no one that this is especially true for the Sonic movie. Twitter user Marx Pan came across some concept art from early 2018 on Chinese microblogging website Weibo.
Created by Weibo users Xu Tianhua Thx and Jin Xiaoyu for Blur Studios, one of the movie’s special effects houses, the concept art showcases a never before seen lizard villain and Sonic getting into a bar fight with Captain America himself, Chris Evans, who was apparently the actor Jeffrey Fowler wanted early on.
This concept art appears to confirm a detail found in the movie’s copyright, which mentioned a lizard villain wanting to use Sonic’s power to take over the universe.
You can check the images out on the Xu Tianhua’s page, or look at them below:

Sonic Homing In On Top Box Office Spot With $21 Mil Friday Haul, $64.3 Mil Projected
We now have our first concrete numbers for Sonic the Hedgehog’s U.S. box office performance, and they’re looking good: it hauled in $21 million it’s opening day (which includes the $3 million from Thursday night previews). To put that in perspective, this makes it the largest opening day of all time for a video game movie, allowing it to barely squeak past Detective Pikachu’s $20.7 million.
These numbers have also increased the movie’s box office projection. The latest box office estimates from Deadline now project the movie making $64.3 million through President’s Day, including $53.99 million over the three-day weekend. The latter number puts Sonic the Hedgehog tantalizingly close to being the largest U.S. opening for a video game movie ever, with the current record holder, Detective Pikachu, being only slightly higher then that at $54.3 million.
These estimates are also significantly up from what was projected yesterday, when the Sonic movie was projected to make $45 million and $55 million over the three-day and President’s Day weekend, respectively. Paramount itself has released somewhat lower projections, with a $60 million four-day and $50 million three-day haul expected, which would still make it the second biggest video game movie opening.
Sonic’s ticket sales are being heavily driven by families, which make up 44 percent of ticket sales, with general audiences being the remaining 56 percent.
Sonic’s first international numbers should be released either later today or tomorrow. When those numbers come, we’ll be updating this article, so stay tuned!

Sonic Rings Up $3 Million in Thursday Previews, Projected to Make $55 Million Over the Weekend
It looks like Paramount and SEGA may have a hit on their hands, if Sonic the Hedgehog’s Thursday night preview haul and latest United States box office projections are any indication. Sonic the Hedgehog made $3 million Thursday night, with the latest projections now putting the movie’s US President’s Day weekend haul (which includes Monday) at $55 million.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s three day projections, which only count Friday through Sunday, have the movie making $47.5 million. If this happens, it would be the third highest opening weekend for any video game movie, only bested by 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider ($47.7 million) and last year’s Detective Pikachu ($54.7 Million).
With these kinds of numbers, Sonic the Hedgehog is now set to make back well over half of it’s estimated $81-$95 million budget just from its U.S. opening. It’s still possible for the movie to fall short of these expectations, or exceed them. It could also potentially bomb internationally. Barring either of these events, Sonic the Hedgehog is going to make Paramount some money.

Sonic the Hedgehog Scores a 64% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes
With 91 reviews in, Sonic the Hedgehog is currently looking to be a winner with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently holding a 64% rating, a clear majority of critics have given the movie a thumbs up! It should be noted that Rotten Tomatoes percentages are averages of scores, but instead the percentage of critics who either liked or hated the movie.
With less than one hundred reviews, Sonic the Hedgehog’s RT percentage is likely to continue fluctuating over the next few weeks, as hundreds of critics weigh in. It’s unlikely to reach Rotten Tomatoes “certified fresh” rating (which requires a 75% rating), and it could still fall below the 60% threshold and enter “rotten” territory. But, at the very least, critics don’t see it as the dumpster fire some were expecting. It’ll also certainly score better then the Mario movie did.
While Rotten Tomatoes has the most comprehensive collection of reviews, it’s worth noting how the movie is doing by other metrics. The movie currently holds a 93% from Rotten Tomatoes’ verified audience reviews (which must be connected to a ticket purchase). On Metacritic, the movie currently holds a 47, a “mixed or average” score, with 35 reviews.
